Bluegrass Rain Garden Alliance to Hold Third Annual Tour
[Lexington, Ky.] – The Bluegrass Rain Garden Alliance (BRGA) will host its third annual rain garden tour on Sunday June 13. The tour is free and will begin at the Coca-Cola Facility, 2275 Leestown Road in Lexington, at 2 p.m. and will last until 5 p.m. Limited transportation to subsequent locations will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis. The 2010 rain garden tour will feature knowledgeable speakers showing a total of seven rain gardens that have been planted in residential and commercial settings. Registration is encouraged at www.bgPRIDE.org.
“We’re very excited to be hosting the rain garden tour for the third year,” said Kara Benge, rain garden project coordinator. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for anyone who is interested in improving their community’s water quality to see firsthand how easy a rain garden can be to plant and maintain.”
A rain garden is planted in a shallow depression, and is strategically located to capture stormwater runoff. The water is held by the garden and allowed to slowly infiltrate the soil. The soil and plant roots use natural processes to improve water quality by filtering pollutants, reducing the amount of stormwater runoff and recharging the groundwater supply.
The Bluegrass Rain Garden Alliance is a joint initiative by Bluegrass Partnership for a Green Community, Tracy Farmer Institute for Sustainability and the Environment, Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government, Bluegrass PRIDE and EcoGro.
