[Lexington, Ky.] – As part of its ongoing efforts to educate Central Kentuckians on best practices for handling stormwater, Bluegrass PRIDE (Personal Responsibility In a Desirable Environment) will host a rain barrel workshop at its headquarters, 3120 Pimlico Parkway, Suite 126, on November 7. Beginning at 10 a.m., the event will enable participants to purchase and construct their own rain barrel, learning from PRIDE’s experts.
“Rain barrels are wonderful tools to reduce stormwater runoff from a property. I hope that as many people as possible take advantage of our workshop for the health of Kentucky’s water,” said Amy Sohner, executive director of Bluegrass PRIDE.
The workshop will include discussion of rain barrels, their benefits, and questions/answers concerning their use. Interested participants should register for the workshop by contacting Bluegrass PRIDE at 866.222.1648. The cost of the workshop is $45. This fee covers all costs associated with the workshop, including the 55-gallon plastic barrel. Participants are encouraged to bring their own jigsaw and drill, but some will be provided if necessary.
Rain barrels are containers that connect to downspouts, collecting water and decreasing the amount of rain that runs off a property. This helps to prevent pollutants such as pet waste, automotive fluids and fertilizer from entering a storm drain system before being discharged into local waterways.
Bluegrass PRIDE provides environmental information and resources to schools, community groups, local governments and citizens in 18 counties throughout Central Kentucky. For more information, log on to www.bgPRIDE.org.
