Following collection, devices are sent to Eco-Cell where they will be sorted based on whether they are to be reused or recycled. Phones, MP3s and PDAs that are designated for reuse will be refurbished for first-time, low-income users in foreign countries. A number of phones are also set aside for local organizations to distribute, including hospitals who give them to patients, enabling them to make emergency calls. Phones with no resale value will be recycled using successfully demonstrated technologies for e-waste recycling.Eco-Cell operates under a strict no-landfill policy.
Bluegrass PRIDE uses the money it receives from Eco-Cell to purchase boxes for the responsible disposal and recycling of household batteries.
