FOGs are Fats, Oils, and Grease produced from cooking and can be harmful to Lexington’s sewer system if disposed of improperly. Typical fats, oils, and grease include lard, butter and margarine, meat fats, and food scraps. FOGs can come from homes, apartments, and anywhere food is prepared. Once FOGs are dumped down the drain, they solidify and coat the inside of sewer pipes. This type of build-up can lead to clogged pipes and sewer overflows. Sewage overflows can occur in your house, apartment, neighbor’s house, business, and in parks and streets. These can be costly to repair and increase sewage rates for everyone.
