A city-wide challenge to encourage businesses, schools and multi-family communities to reduce their environmental impact was launched today by Lexington’s Department of Environmental Quality and Public Works and Bluegrass PRIDE (Personal Responsibility In a Desirable Environment).
The Live Green Lexington Games is a free, voluntary year-long competition focusing on participants’ improvements in waste reduction, water quality and energy efficiency. Performance measurements will occur through scorecards submitted by the participants at the beginning and end of the challenge.
"Trainings will be offered to all participants, so this is the perfect opportunity for a business that isn't sure where to start to become more environmentally-friendly," said Cheryl Taylor, commissioner of the Department of Environmental Quality and Public Works. "We hope that participants in the Games will take the information they've learned and use it for years to come."
The deadline to register for the competition is July 1. Participating organizations demonstrating the greatest improvement in any category will receive an award at the end of the competition.
“The Live Green Lexington Games are a really exciting way for Bluegrass PRIDE and LFUCG to work with Lexington’s business community and spotlight its positive environmental stewardship,” said Maxine Rudder, deputy executive director of Bluegrass PRIDE. “We’re looking forward to what will surely be an exciting year of competition.”
The Games are a component of the Live Green Lexington Partner Program, administered by PRIDE through a contract with the city.
