[Lexington, Ky.] – To celebrate a renovated Gainesway Pond and restored wetland, Bluegrass PRIDE (Personal Responsibility In a Desirable Environment) and Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government (LFUCG) are planning a field day on September 26 at the Gainesway Park Community Center. The event will begin with a litter cleanup at 9 a.m. and will feature hands-on activities for youth and adults until 2 p.m. Activities will include a tour of the pond and its surrounding trail, pond and wetland water quality tests, a biological assessment of the pond and wetland, storm drain stenciling, and an EnviroScape activity, designed to show how pollutants enter the Gainesway watershed.
In addition to activities coordinated by Bluegrass PRIDE, the field day will feature opportunities for attendees to interact with LFUCG’s Director of Water and Air Quality, Charlie Martin, and CDP Engineers’ Scott Southall, who will be on hand to describe the features of the pond and wetland and answer questions. Booth and activity space is still available at the Gainesway Park and Community Center for interested organizations and volunteer assistance is requested for activities.
“Gainesway Pond is a wonderful example of a thriving wetland and Bluegrass PRIDE is proud to be a part of educating the public about water quality, along with LFUCG and CDP Engineers,” said Amy Sohner, executive director of Bluegrass PRIDE. “I hope that residents of the Gainesway area in particular will take the opportunity to come out on September 26 and enjoy the renovated pond and restored wetland.”
Funding for Gainesway pond renovation and wetland restoration was provided by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which leads the nation’s environmental science, research, education and assessment efforts to protect human health and the environment.
