Bluegrass PRIDE to Host Georgetown Rain Barrel Workshop
[Lexington, Ky.] – Bluegrass PRIDE (Personal Responsibility In a Desirable Environment) will host a Rain Barrel Workshop at Georgetown Public Works Facility, 235 West Yusen Way on Saturday, May 15 2010 at 9:30 a.m.The hands-on workshop is part of the Bluegrass PRIDE’s ongoing efforts to educate Central Kentuckians about practices to reduce stormwater runoff in order to protect the area’s streams and waterways.
For a $45 fee, which includes the cost of a 55-gallon rain barrel, participants will learn how to construct, install and maintain a rain barrel in order to reduce the water runoff from their property. Registration for the workshop is on first-come, first served basis and interested participants should enroll for the workshop at www.bgPRIDE.org. Payment is due at the time of registration. Workshop attendees are encouraged to bring their own power drill with 7/8” drill bit and a jigsaw. If participants are unable to furnish their own tools, some will be supplied by PRIDE.
“Improving water quality in Central Kentucky is a top priority for Bluegrass PRIDE,” said Amy Sohner, executive director of Bluegrass PRIDE. “We encourage people to take advantage of the workshop and learn more about the benefits provided by installing a rain barrel. They not only help the environment but can also reduce the use of municipal water.”
Rain barrels connect directly to a downspout, collecting water and decreasing the amount of rain water that runs off your property. By reducing stormwater runoff, rain barrels prevent pollutants such as pet waste, automotive fluids and fertilizer from entering storm drains and, ultimately, local waterways. Bluegrass PRIDE provides resources and education to empower Central Kentuckians to foster positive environmental change in their communities.
