On average, about 90% of Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collected is paint, and using an alternative disposal method, such as Waste Paint Hardener ™ crystals, can greatly reduce the overall cost of HHW disposal. Therefore, Bluegrass PRIDE is offering Waste Paint Hardener™ at no cost to residents of its service region. To receive up to 5 free bags of these crystals, contact your local PRIDE Coordinator. If you have trouble reaching your county’s coordinator, call the PRIDE office toll free at 866.222.1648.
Features of Waste Paint Hardener™:
•
One bag will harden up to 2/3 of a gallon (2.5L) of water-based paint such as latex and acrylic.
•
Works in minutes
•
Non-toxic
•
Environmentally sound
Directions for use:
1.
Add the crystals to the leftover water based paint. Each bag has about 2/3 of a cup of crystals in it. If you only have ¼ of a gallon of paint, you will only need about ¼ of a cup of the crystals. Water may be added to thick paint for ease of use.
2.
Stir paint until thick. Paint-crystal mixture will be squishy. It may be disposed of in this state, so long as no paint would drip out if the can were held upside down.
3.
Loosely replace lid.
4.
Dispose of as regular garbage in accordance with local regulations.
Oil based paint can not be hardened with the Waste Paint Hardener. To dispose of oil based paint, mix with sand or kitty litter until solid and set out next to garbage can.
Lead based paint must be taken to a Household hazardous waste collection.
