WasteBuster Program Wins Environmental Quality Commission Award
[Lexington, Ky.] – As part of Earth Week 2009, the WasteBuster program – an initiative sponsored by Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government (LFUCG) and managed by Bluegrass PRIDE (Personal Responsibility In a Desirable Environment) – was recognized with an Earth Day Award from the Kentucky Environmental Quality Commission (EQC).
The program works with businesses, schools and apartment complexes to encourage increased waste reduction practices throughout Lexington. Since its inception in 2006, the WasteBuster program has enlisted over 140 businesses, more than 70 schools and 50 apartment complexes as participants.
“It’s very exciting and a great honor to have the WasteBuster program recognized by the Environmental Quality Commission, an entity that, like Bluegrass PRIDE, works with the public to confront and solve environmental problems. ” said Bluegrass PRIDE’s Executive Director, Amy Sohner.
The EQC Earth Day Award, presented each year to Kentuckians who have made outstanding contributions to environmental protection, is the third for the WasteBuster program, following awards from the Kentucky Association for Environmental Education and the LFUCG Environmental Commission.
