So what is hazardous? In general, if it can catch fire, react, or explode when mixed with other substances, or if it is corrosive or toxic, a substance is considered hazardous. Here are some common vocabulary terms used to describe hazardous waste:

Flammable- can be ignited under almost any climate conditions

Toxic- inhalation, ingestions, or absorption of the substance may lead to injury or death

Corrosive- can cause deterioration or irreversible alteration in body tissues or the surface of a material at the site of contact.

Irritant- a substance causing inflammation of the skin, eyes, respiratory system or mucous membranes.
